The big news of Day 5 for our CDL or Bust class is that Ryan Strange, Russell Durgasingh and Teddy Flener Jr. all passed their CDL permit exams, joining classmates Anna Basham, Wayne Meenach and Joey Wilson Jr., who passed on Day 4. Jason Horton had his permit beforehand because he drives a box truck for a living.
When the seven students return to Truck America Training for Day 6 on Monday, they will get behind the wheels of big rigs for the first time. Instructors Shawn Dillion and Jimmy Gibson will teach them how to back up and shift while proving they know the gear shift pattern of their vehicles that have 13 speeds, although only nine will be used during class.
Monday and probably Tuesday will be spent on the large oval at TAT’s 20-acre facility before the seven finally get out on the road Wednesday. The last 45 minutes to an hour each day will focus on pre-trip inspections.
